My English progress

My name is Tiziana Muscolino and first of all I am going to talk about my progress in English from 2012 to 2014.

On the one hand writing is one of the most important skills in any language. I love writing, is one of my favorite hobbies, but I must admit that I would rather write informal than formal letters. I feel comfortable writing descriptions, opinion essays, argumentative essays.
On the other hand we should not forget to focus on listening, reading and speaking skills when learning a language. We have to be competitive in them as well.

As a result of our constant work in blogs, writing essays, reading texts and books and doing interesting listening exercises, we all have improve a lot our English.
What is more, I am able to accurate my ideas and write them in the correct order which gives the right sense and meaning to the compositions. The extension of my writings has strongly enlarged.

Therefore, it gives the needed maturity to my essays.
For instance, we can compare one of my first writings in the blog “How do I feel being a vegetarian” and one of the last ones: “Leadership in business and my future expectations”.
The latest essay shows how I am capable to give richness in content, grammar and vocabulary. I can offer different points of view, I can give my opinion in a polite, formal way, I can justify it, I can use some complex structures, I am always searching for new words and I avoid repeating them in the same text.

Moreover, in this two year courses I have the habit to work with the dictionary opened. I believe that it is fantastic so as to increase vocabulary and check the correct spelling as well.
To sum up, I really enjoyed doing the last task of English. I have learned a lot with Human Rights. It has been very interesting, although it has been sad too. I realized that there is still so much work to do, so many people still suffering.

Besides my writings I can also talk about my oral presentations.
As far as I am concerned I would like to say that I feel more self-confident speaking in public and giving a speech. My oral presentations are focused on the topic more than they used to be.
I remember the first one being very nervous.
Furthermore, I was able to keep eye contact in my last presentation. That was a challenge for me. It is clear that, when speaking in public, we should give interesting and relevant information to the audience.
On top of that a successful speech needs to be fluid and provided by suitable intonation.

Dear Tiziana,

I must give you some advice before starting this period in your life.
I recomend you to keep your work up everyday and to do things people ask you from the begining don't let them repeat it to you because it will be very annoying.
You will meet a lot of different people, kind people, nice ones, mean ones, good and bad influences. Make sure you choose the right ones because they might help you and guide you through your future.

You will also pass through difficult moments. Don't let them get you down. You have to love yourself and really fight about what you want. You will have to make important decitions and they might become a nightmeare but don't forget you always have people who love you around.

However, let me tell you something else: it looks like you will spend the rest of your life in there. The time actually flies and I can't believe it! In one week I'll be done with all this! Don't be scared of trying new things and experiences.

Enjoy your life every moment in any way, make the most of it every day, keep yourself busy all the time, don't ever feel lazy you can always find something to do.

At the moment I'm frustated because I'm not sure what I should do next year but you know what? I have a whole life in front of me and I'm not scared of making mistakes or not getting it right straight away. As I always say, do whatever your heart says.

Your heart,
Tiziana

Education is the key

To begin with the idea that education is the key I must definitely say: I agree with it.
On the one hand, we have the example of many countries, in history and still nowadays, that keeping their people in ignorance make it easy to dominate them. What do we understand by ignorance? Not being able to read.
But, on the other hand, it makes a country poor because they don’t know how to solve daily problems or make use of their own richness or sources in industry.

Therefore, why are there so many people uneducated on Earth? Why do we call to some of our brothers and sisters The Third World? Why do we have the invasion of immigrants to our land searching for help in order to survive offering their children better choices than in their own home town?

As far as I am concerned, the big potential countries that dominate the world should have strong interests for that. It is not possible that if we put our efforts and work together there won’t be a positive result. We ought to contribute in the growth and development of these countries by themselves. We could teach them to do so.

I totally agree with the video when the guy says: Education is not just filling the heads, is about inspiring one's mind.
Our society has failed. The system is in crises, not only the financial sector, but the whole system.
So, that is why I dare to say that we must change our way of educating. It is no more effective, we are educated by the competition, by being a number, by having a mark…. This is not educating. As far as I get it…., as far as I succeed….. Those are the ideas of the crowd. Such politicians who command us have been educated in that way.

Consequently, the future education should educate in many ways. Being free, being autonomous, having a good attitude in front of different problems, being analytical, being capable of synthesize, being creative.

Furthermore, there is no need to memorize. Everything is available in internet. We should learn how to contrast the information and being critical to improve things from the past.

To sum up, we should give children tools for achieving their aims in order to build strong, sensitive and happy human beings that take care of others interests a part from their owns.

Vocabulary: fate, analytical.

Human Rights

Human Rights are the rights you have simply because you are human. They are universal and they apply to all kind of people: poor, rich, teachers, the garbage man, old, young, children…. To any of us.
At first there were no human rights. If you were with the right crowd, you were safe; but if you weren’t, then you weren’t.
They started in Babylonia with Cyrus The Great. He proclaimed that all slaves were free to go. The ideas of The Emperor travelled quickly to India, Greece, Rome…
In Rome they had what it was called Natural Law. That means that a King could be above of what they understood, on those days, by human rights.
People rights were recognized in England in 1215 agreeing that not even people of power could go over them. They wrote the “Carta Magna”.
They defended that all men are created equal.
Then America was born. France fought for their own rights and many things happen in history around this subject again. It wasn’t so easy to give the same meaning everywhere to human rights.

The roman concept of natural law became Natural Rights. Although once more (by year 1800), someone called Napoleon became Emperor of the World and the rest of countries in Europe which were against this fact defeated him and his army.
Meanwhile all this was going on in Europe, in India a young boy called Mahatma Gandhi leaded Indian protests and defended that all humans are equal and must have the same rights, not just in Europe.

However, two World Wars interrupted the intention. Hitler, Mussolini….. 90 million people were in Nazi’s camps. Human rights were near to extinguish.
Therefore the countries of the world bended together and created the United Nations in 1945 to reaffirm faith in fundamental rights in
the dignity and worth of human person. Besides all this, they should analyze what human rights should be.

In 1948 Eleanor Roosevelt announced the Universal Human Rights. Whereas when they were signed they didn’t have the force of law. It was optional.
That’s why again great people as Luther King and Mandela fought pacifically in order to guarantee Human Rights and abolish discrimination. It lasted 2 more decades to achieve it.
What is more, Human Rights should be more than words written on pages or on commercial ads. Those important words should become a reality, and not only a history lesson.
Nowadays, lots of people are fighting for that reason and they are not giants or super heroes…. They are kids, fathers, mothers, teachers, free thinking individual who have decided not to be silent.

There are 30 Human Rights and they should be our daily choices as human beings. We should act with responsibility and treat each other in a respectful way and apply the wise and deep sentence: what you don’t want for you, don’t do it to others. Help and protect the weak.
To sum up with my essay I would like to add that despite the strength of humans to have these Human Rights written and understood them as law, we still don’t respect lots of them in the world. Why there are millions of people starving and dying one person every five seconds; why there are millions of adults who are unable to read; why there are thousands of people in prison for speaking their minds……

I was familiar to all Human Rights because as a student you have a perspective of what kind of things happen in life and what is denounced in the daily news.
I sincerely believe that there is still much work to do.

Vocabulary: the gerund of “to die”=dying, to extinguish, to bend.

Human Rights

Last April the 14th , 296 young girls from Nigeria in secondary school were kidnapped while they were studying having their final exams.
Some rumors say that they have been sold to the Islamic army to cover their sexual and home needs.
Lots of organizations and countries have denounced that fact and make efforts to bring those girls back. The hashtag in twitter says #BringBackOurGirls.
The kidnappers are members of a group called Boko Haram which means: Occident Education is forbidden.
The Nigerians are desolated and ask themselves about the seep the Government act when this fact occurred. It took 48 hours to start persecution.
Moreover, Nigerians are tired that Human Rights are not accomplished. They are constantly violated. They feel insecure and hopeless. http://www.hrw.org/ Girls’ Abductions a Last Straw for Nigerians.

On the contrary in our country we, girls, can have education which make us have a wide consciousness and the possibility of being free. That is a very important fact. If some governments have their population dominated is because they restrict giving education.
Seeing that, we can take part as a group in many organizations. I am a member of avaaz.org http://www.avaaz.org/es/save_the_southern_ocean_5/?biUgTab&v=18901 (this is an example of the grate number of matters they defend or denounce)

To end up with, I would like to say that everyone can contribute in having a better world by being respectful to others and using the internet facilities to condemn the noncompliance of Human Rights.

Vocabulary: dowry, hashtag, to snatch

Are we too dependant on mobile phones?

As technology is increasing and developing more and more nowadays people are becoming dependant on the devices they use. Most people use a mobile phones and I do think that people are too dependant on them.

First of all, milions of people now can work from their phones and stay at home at the same time. That menas that you can choose your teamtable and organize it. Which is working confortly and anywhere not only your house. But it also means you will always have to be aware if everything is working perflectly and if anyone from the same company needs your help. As a result of this constantly you will be cheking your phone.
In addition, parents who worry about their children can now always have them controlled. With the phone you can contact them at any time and you can locate them too.

However, we have to be realistic and assume that mobile phones are parto of the consumism and shops make us dependant on them. How? Creating new free applications, free communications apps and of course launching new products constantly on markets.

In short even if there are loads of benefits by having a mobile phone there is one reason which is consumism that breaks everything. The main problem might be addiction and wanting to be on the loop witth the competence.

Description of a soulmate for me

A soulmate is someone who you find once in your life. When you meet your soulmate you feel it, there is a special connection, different from other times you might have though you have fall in love.

Firstly my soulmate should be taller than me. He should have dark skin and bright eyes. I usually don't like blonde guys. He should be attractive at a first side with a big smile and fercet white teeth. He should also be fit, I like boys who love doing sports so he can teach me whatever he can do. I'm not saying I like boys with huge muscels because I don't.

However, a part from the physical outlook, the most important thing is his personality. My soulmate should be a sensitive guy with real feelings and emotions. Someone who I could trust on, someone who I can explain all my problems and I felt like he was my shelter. I need someone who I can communicate with because it is necessary to explain everything and to understand each other. My soulmate should be my motivation and strengh everyday to keep smiling and wanting to reach my goals. I want someone who can always support my decitions.

What's more one of the most important virtues is honesty. How can you trust someone if there isn't honesty between you and your couple? There has to be confidence in a relationship otherwise I wouldn't be able to trust on someone. As well as honest, he has to be kind, generous, cheerful, responsible, passionate and funny, with a good sense of humor. In addition my soulmate should be a crazy person who likes trying new things as I do. Someone patient because I can be irritating sometimes. And of course a romantic guy because I just love romantic guys, don't ask me why.

In conclusion, I want a guy who knows me better than I do. I want someone who makes me happy everyday and who makes me feel full of love.  Someone who I want to fight for and someone who is willing to leave everything for me.

Self evaluation

To begin my oral presentation was about Vegetarianism because my research project was about the vegetarian diet. It was from last year as I am redoing the year but I improved some things.  When analyzing an oral presentation you have to set some points:
the presentation, the content, the structure, the body language and eye contact, the language and the pronuntation.

I used the same power point as last year but I tried to eliminate all the words I'd put on it. I wanted to be able to explain to my class mates by heart everything I did in my research project. Honestly? I was very glad of my oral presentation. The structure of my oral presentation was clear and organized. I explained it at the beggining as it showed the index. I wanted it to be short but understandable and I divided it starting with the definition, then I explained what is a health diet and which steps are to be followed, than the types of vegetarianism and finally causes, concequences and conclusions.

In every different page of the power point I put a veggie picture to make it more nice.
Of course I can always be better than last time but I was so happy when I finished my oral presentation that I couldn't see any error. When my mind goes white I get nervous but I always try to say anything that comes to my mind.I try to do my best and at the end of every sentence I try to look up. I learn it by heart and I do it very well at home but when there are 20 persons looking at me I get embarrased.
To finish up my best is the pronuntation, I have the advantage of being a person who has the facility on catching any pronuntation in any laguage. What's more as you might know I've been living for a year in Ireland and that made my accent brilliant.

This time I was by my own and as nervous as I am I can say I did a good job !! :)

Talking about internet..

Nowadays internet is the essential way to communicate and to be well informed. It is something used the 24th hours a day by millions of people. At the moment it isn't just about computers, technology has evolved so much.

To begin with, it is important to say that internet i essential for a lot of people because they have to work with it and the great advantage is that they can have internet anywhere they like. For example for people with disabilities and big business mens who work a lot it is easier for them to work in their houses.
Further more, you can communicate and do video calls with relatives or friends who are in the distance.
As you know lot of people get information from the internet and learn alot of new things about any topic they are interested in.

However everything has its consequences; internet is not the exception. It has negative sides as you can't trust all the information that is uploaded and some people hide their real identity. On the other hand people don't know that the devices produces harmful waves which are damaging our health. What's more we have to be aware how do we put our personal information because there are hackers and people who steal personal data.
It is a shame tat people don't know how to communicate face to face anymore because of their addiction.

To conclude, internet can be both good and bad and to be extrem in something is not always worth it. We have to try to mix both and our life will be better day after day.

Social Classes

Having read the book Pride and Prejudice, we can talk about a love story but we can go deeper and discover other important topics. Such as empiricism, the feminism thoughts of Lizzy and the social classes.
I will focus my comment on the social classes that we can find in Pride and Prejudice.

To begin the Bennet's family belongs to a medium social class. They live in the country side and the worst worry her mother has is her daughters to get married with a rich men. Secondly we have Darcy's huge mansion, Bingley's house or Lady's Katherine one. These belongs to the upper social class and we can see the difference between them. For example in the ball when the upper social class goes in the medium ones have to bow. But the book shows us that love is stronger than anything.

Finally Lizzy gets married with Darcy even though Lady Katherine doesn't accepted it because she says that her daughter is engaged to him. Jane gets married with Bingley even though Bingley's sister doesn't like Bennet's family because she thinks that they don't have good manners.

Self evaluation of my oral presentation

This link is to see the video in Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MazsDN3iSLw

To begin my oral presentation was about women stereotypes. When analyzing an oral presentation you have to set some points:
the presentation, the content, the structure, the body language and eye contact, the language and the pronuntation.

I used the Prezi for the first time and to be honest it was a million time better than the Power Point. The structure of our oral presentation was clear and organazed. We explained it at the beggining as it showed the index. Meri started with the definition of what a stereotype is. Then I explained where did everything began with the beauty myth. I also explained the how should be the perfect woman in the planet. Before the conclusion we told the negative consequences.
We took all the information from Internet and we translated everything to make it more understandable. We also put a lot of pictures to keep the atention of the class on them and not on us.
My weak point as usual is the body languages; it was the first time doing an oral presentation in front of them so that made me nervious. I always study everything by heart but then I get stressed and I think I'm not saying everything I have to say and I start to read. I try to do my best and at the end of every sentence I try to look up.
To finish up my best is the pronuntation, I have the advantage of being a person who has the facility on catching any pronuntation in any laguage. What's more as you might know I've been living for a year in Ireland and that made my accent brilliant.

I always can improve some little things in my oral presentation and I will do my best to make the next one better :)

Jenna: I don't know yet... The operation is so expensive, and you know.. I don't have much money now.
Lily: I don't think it's so important how you look, I love you the way you are.
Jenna: Suuuuuure, you say it because you have BIG boobs, you can't understand me!
Lily: Shut up slut! I love you and I hate this type of operations, you know what I mean.

Jenna: If you step one more time, I'll kill you.
Lily: Making you angry is a piece of cake! hahaha
Jenna: Oh Lily, stop. Please don't start that all over again.
Lily: Now tell me that you love me.
Jenna: mh... I love you and your sweets, give me one.
Lily: yeeey, you did it!

Lily: You'll never change.
Jenna: And you love just the way I am

Women stereotypes

I did the oral presentation with Meritxell Romans and we divided it in equal parts to present it.
My parts were the following:

"The beauty myth"
The beauty myth exists in our society only because of the gender stereotyping and the constant display of it from the media. The concept behind the myth was designed by men to keep woman distracted and control them through the media.
The beauty myth itself is the unrealistic and unbelievable standards of beauty set by women due to their increasing importance into business and politics.
The myth looks like a joke but it has a vital importance for women.
As many people know, the Barbie doll is one of the first stereotypes that a little girl gets to know, and some girls want to be like their dolls. Is devastating to see the effect of beauty society rules in little women selfconfident.

"Female attractiveness characteristics"
After a research made in EEUU the dream girl comes to be like her: smart girl, dark skined, long and skinny legs, big breasts, beautiful smile, narrow hips,... they are impossible!

To specify a bit more the characteristics are:
-Facial features: the University of Toronto made a study of the ideals facial proportions. Jessica Alba is close to the average famale profile. The face should measure the same from length and width. The nose has to be exacly in the middle and your eyes at half way to the end of the face. To finish from your eyes to the mouth there has to be a distance of a third.

-Body mass: it's a very important factor because is something very visual. Since a few years ago men prefered plumped women. But when Barbie arrived it made a huge change in women minds since they were very young. So it came to be a very slim profile o the perfect girl.
-Skin: there used to be a preference for lighter skined women. But lately the studies prove that dark skinned women are better.
-Eye colour: this study is very curious because it says that brown eyed men have no preferences regarding to the women eye colour.
In contrast blue eyed colour men prefer women of their same colour eye.

"Negatives consequences"
Talking about women, when they feel like they don't fit in or they feel uncomfortable with the group of people that involves them, this can cause very negative consequences such as anxiety, double of difficulties to do a task. In the worst cases it can develop illness like anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders.

In our society stereotypes are learnd at the age between 3-4 years old. One of the biggest influences is the media: adds, TV shows, movies, social networks,... Children start to get involved in a world of manipulation and cheat.

The messages act unconsciously on us and we are receving them every single day.

You can complement the information with the prezi I posted under :

Obama's speech !

Dear, Sònia
It's great talking and sharing this things to you.

Hi, I'm Tiziana and I'm 17 years old. Last year things didn't go as I expected and now
I'm redoing the last year of high school. I don't really think it's a waste of time because from now on I still have a whole year
to think about what I really want to do and it is also another year of experience.

At the moment my very first goal to reach is to end high school successfully. I have started motivated and I hope it lasts.
If I focuse my life in a few years from now I actually don't see anything clear. But I know for sure that I will be studying languages and
hopefully (if I have the way to earn some money) travelling a lot.

Obama's speech on the one hand is helpful for those people who are unmotivated, who may want to give up, who may think that their problems are the worst, those people who don't mind about the future of their own nation. However, as Obama says (and it's my favourite quote):
"every single one of us have something to offer and we have the responsibility to discover what it is".
On the other hand Obama's speech encourages you to make it possible through any hazard. And it makes you trust yourself.

To end up I would like to say that I want to make proud all the people around me who have been all this time supporting me and helping me to do my best. This year is a second chance for me and I know this time I will succeed.

I hope to hear from you soon!!!!
All the best,

Is humour important? Is laugh necessary?

What would we do if we didn’t have humour in our worst moments in life? Do you think the world would be more pessimist? Would the society be more depressive?
In our view humour is compulsory necessary day by day, minute by minute. Is obvious that people aren’t happy the 24 hours of a day but is important to try to forget about problems and look the good sides of things. That’s why life would be boring without laughs.
-To begin with a good day the first thing we should do is do something that you like, something that makes you in a good mood. You can always remember something that made you laugh the day before. Therefore not everything that you do in a day is enjoyable but you have to be positive and take it easy.
-Furthermore in your free time it’s essential to look into things we can remember forever such as spending time with your friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, watching TV shows like two and a half men, who I met your mother Bib bang theory, modern family or ridicule business and so on.
-When you feel like doing nothing, you don’t want to see anyone or go anywhere; you need laugher more than anything, someone with a good sense of humour to make you laugh with its owns jokes.
-To sum up, the best of a bad day happens when you come across a person who can make you laugh even though you don’t feel like it.
As a conclusion we both thing that smiling should be compulsory for everyone of us. Because when we smile life seems to be easier and happier. When you laugh you can see the world  less worst than it is. Our advice is to laugh, smile and be happy all the time even you think is not worth it.
This is a compatition from Meritxell Romans and I.

FINAL REFLECTION.

Well it's true that I'm on the end of 2nd Batxillerat but next year as I said in another post I'm redoing the year because there are some subjects which I find very hard to study and I didn't pass them.
To be honest I think my English was better when I first arrived here because I had just arrived from Ireland. I had more facility to speak and I didn't need to think before talking. I still feel very fluent in English but it isn't the same. I considere that my best oral presentation was the first one I did. I talked about Ireland and the year I spent there. I wasn't nervous because I still didn't know my class mates. I knew my English was  really good and I didn't even need to study.
But then as I got to know my other class mates I got more shy talking in front of them.
On the other hand with the written stuff I have to say that I'm better now than before. When I was in Ireland teachers didn't teach me how to write properly. Obviously people of my age already knew how to write. When I was in class I listened to the teacher and sometimes I had to pick up notes depending on the subject. However here in Castelló d'Empúries I learned how to write an essay correctly. We have a photocopy with all kind of text and next to it the structure, grammar, vocabulary,... that we need for each one. I guess my writings are more accurate now.
As the time passes, I read books in English, I watch original version movies, I keep in touch with some good Irish friends. All this helps me to keep my English in a good level.

FORMAL LETTER

United Nations Human Rights Committee                                                                         98ªMontseny Road

                                                                                                                          Catalonia(Girona- Empuriabrava)
3rd of April 2013
Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing inn order to claim that I am very disappointed with the Global system. I can hardly say some countries that now a day can live in peace. Human Rights were created for this, to live in an equal world, in fact, the result is not the one pretended. I am sure you will agree with me that in the planet we live noone is equal in any sence. From my point of view we need a change. However, this change has to make a huge hit to the hole world. We need somethingdifferent, something that everyone can be aware of.

I am a  girl from Spain and two weeks ago I saw link that made me so sad: my country has one of the biggest companies from selling weapons in other countries where the children are used as soldier. How can we say : "I do not want war" if we are the ones that give the material to kill persons. How can we be so hypocrites?
Selling weapons should be forbidden everywhere. We shouldn't fight for things, that is not the way you understand people...have you ever though of talking to them?

In short we really need to do something, we can not stay with our arms crossed and letting rich people manipulate and steal us. Speacially for the polititians.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.                                               Yours sincerily, Tiziana Muscolino

INTERVIEW WITH ROGER FEDERER

It's one day to start Wimbledon and today we have Roger Federer the top tennis plyer ever, in life.

-Welcome Federer to our programe... so tell us how do you feel one day before starting this big event?
-Hi and thank you for these words. Well.. to be honest I'm not nervous at all, I still have a lot of things to think of before my first match.
-Wow, it's incredible you know, loads of people admire you because it looks like you don't even get nervous playing or two minutes before going on court.
-Ha, ha, ha.. yeah I know. Everyone asks me the same. I guess it's just practise and practise. I've learned to really concentrate myself and to look normal during the match. The fact is that I do get nervous haha.
-Oh! It's awesome the way you do that. Does it get difficult to create a family being a tennis player?
-Well, huh, I think I already reached the top and had my best time being a tennis player. Now I want to focus more in my two daughters and my wife.
-Oh! that's sweet! But are we going to see you on court?
-Yes! of course you will, tennis is my passion...
-Thanks for this brilliant moment with you Roger, I'm afraid we have to finish now. Thanks again and good luck with the tournement.
-Thank you, thank you, bye bye...
